I was fortunate enough to spend my childhood immersed in nature; from walks in the woods, seeking out new plants and animals, to walks by the river side or by the sea – taking a quick dip on a hot summer’s day. My mother always wished for my brother and I to love nature and the beauty that Mother Earth had to offer.
As I grew older, walks became more about exercising myself or my dogs, or walking because I was too young to drive but wanted to visit my friends in the holidays. It became more about the destination and less about the journey.
Since I moved to Bristol in 2014 I have found myself very down at times. I realised that I was missing nature, not just being in nature but truly connecting with it. I started to explore the city a bit more and try to find beautiful green places to sit and meditate and that’s when my friend introduced me to Snuff Mills.
What a stunning place. At first I couldn’t get over the majesty of the trees and the exquisite waterfalls which lined the path but soon I just allowed myself to be: to connect. I could feel the life energy flowing through the ground, the trees, the river and even the air. It was magical.
My first encounter with this luscious forest soon turned into a love affair where I find it I don’t visit regularly I become drained and sad. The forest uplifts me and brings me peace and joy but even more amazing was my experience the last time I visited…
Standing at the edge of the woods, on an overcast grey morning, I asked the forest whether I might enter; a slight pause and then I felt a light breeze ruffling my hair in acknowledgment of my request. For some reason I felt the need to begin to allow Reiki to flow; I sensed it leaving my palms and infusing the leafy ceiling above me.
I felt drawn to one tree in particular where I leaned into him and placed my hands against his rough bark. Taking a deep breath I told him I wished to bring Reiki, Love and Light to the forest that day. I was surprised by a deep voice in my head replying, “We welcome you daughter with love and light”. Wow! I have communicated with trees in the past but only sensed feelings, never actually heard them speak.
Blessed by the voice from the tree I turned and began to walk down the path again, in wonder, when I saw sunlight dappling the trees in front of me and a wave of pure love wash over me, a love so strong that I actually cried.
The energy I felt from nature was so raw and so pure that I began to walk slower and really take in the detail of nature – appreciate the beauty and wonder. I put my hand up to a leaf on an overhanging tree and watched, in wonder, as the leaf actually moved closer to my hand, trying to touch it. I was conscious, again, of the Reiki energy flowing from me to the tree via the leaf.
Further through the forest I watched as a little bee flew between various flowers collecting pollen, I was curious as to why the bee ignored one flower in particular. As I drew closer I saw the flower had begun to wilt and die, so I cupped my hands around the flower and intended for my Reiki to flow into the flower, bringing it new life and new pollen so that the bee could feed and the flower would continue to bloom.
As I stepped back I was pretty amazed (though having done Reiki for a while now nothing should surprise me) that the little bee flew into the neglected flower and started to feed. Whether this was the bee sensing my Reiki and wanting to benefit from it or whether the flower began to revive itself, I don’t know, but I was so grateful to be able to give back.
It was a wonderful day and I have been back many times since sensing the effect my Reiki has both on the forest and the people and animals around me. It has really enabled me to be more mindful again in my walking and enjoy being in the forest as a time of connection rather than of necessity and exercise.
If you are Reiki trained I highly recommend you walk mindfully with Reiki, not just in places of beauty, but everywhere. If you are not Reiki trained, you can still enjoy the mindful, relaxation of being surrounded by nature and watching how things change and flow to different rhythms.
Go into nature and see the magic!
