You are what you eat!

You Are What You Eat

We have all heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’ but how many of us have ever thought to apply it to our spiritual selves. Our spirit needs nourishing as much, if not more, than our physical selves. If we fill our bodies with chemicals, alcohol and other toxins it affects the way our bodies function. But it also affects the way our spirit functions. We are, first and foremost, spiritual beings and our bodies are our homes whilst we are on the earth plane. Therefore, mistreating our physical selves means also mistreating our spiritual selves. We do this in many ways but one way that we may not have thought about concerns what we put into our bodies.

If we eat too much unhealthy food it not only affects our digestive systems it also affects our ability to function in our every day lives. It makes us feel lethargic and sluggish. When we feel like this we often do not do things that we are meant to do. We might have to take time off work or instead of going out with our friends we stay indoors feeling depressed. When we are prevented from doing things that we would like to do or are meant to be doing our spirits become low. All that negativity acts as a spiritual dampener on our lives and the more negativity we have around us the more we attract.

Food becomes the enemy. We either eat too much or we starve ourselves. We use it to cheer ourselves up or to punish ourselves. These are all negative emotions that are made worse by the fact that much of the food we are putting in our bodies is slowly poisoning our systems. Because of this our spirit begins to reflect the unhealthy state of our physical bodies and we become ill. When we feel ill we become low spirited and depressed, we hit out at others or we hit out at ourselves. Either way these are yet more negative emotions to add to those already circulating in our systems. One of the best ways of getting over feeling low is to chat with friends and have a good laugh but the one thing we often do when we are surrounded by negativity is to sit indoors and actually avoid seeing or speaking to other people. This adds to our feelings of negativity and then we turn to food or drink to cheer us up and the whole cycle begins again.

Alcohol can be even more harmful to our spiritual selves. Alcohol lowers our defences both spiritually and physically. The more aware we are the more dangerous it can be. Not only do we put our physical selves in danger if we drink too much we also put our spiritual selves in danger. When our defences are lowered we are much more open. This openness is fine when we are conscious of what we are doing and when we are capable of making conscious decisions as to who we wish to communicate with. But if we are not capable of making this decision how can we have any control over who we are inviting in to communicate with us?

There is nothing wrong with having a drink or eating ‘unhealthy’ food occasionally, but we just need to find the right balance and maybe look deeper within ourselves to find out why it is that we need to have that extra drink or that extra cake, burger, bar of chocolate. What is missing in our lives that we feel the need to replace it with unnecessary food or drink? If our spirit is low is it really going to feel better if we eat or drink to excess? We might be better meditating for a few minutes and seeing if that makes a difference first. If it is our spirit that needs feeding, feeding our physical selves is not going to help. Although it might help in the short term, in the long term we will probably feel worse.

There is no easy solution, if there was we wouldn’t have a problem. But looking at out physical problems from a spiritual angle may be just what we need to change our physical habits for the better. After all, if we don’t look after our bodies, where will we live?

Its interesting that both comments on the article relate to meat. It didnt cross my mind that that was the issue being referred to. It took me a long time to be guided away from meat but that was more because I felt i was more often than not eating an unhappy animal. Not because it was dead and being eaten LOL but because its life had been unhappy. I dont want to put any unhappiness into my body. The conditions some animal have to put up with is really cruel and by buying the meat I would be encouraging more animals to be treated this way.

Eating in the light makes sense to me. Eating food that has good energy in it so I feel good after eating it. Have you ever picked fresh fruit or veg and eaten it straight away? It has a real vibrant feel about it and helps you feel good. Food from many supermarkets just dont have this energy. I feel loads better after eating this way.

Hi Kathy

Thanks for your kind comments and your question which has certainly given me food for thought!

I would suggest that the first thing to remember is that we are all individuals with our own pathway to follow, our own free will and our own sense of what we consider to be right and wrong. Our moral sense comes in part from our upbringing, education and life experiences so far and spiritually from our previous lives and the experiences we had during those lives.

Only you can decide whether you feel it is right for you to eat meat. If you do not feel good about eating meat then perhaps you shouldn’t eat it. But if you do stop eating meat you need to make sure that you still have the proper amount of protein in your diet otherwise your body will not function properly and this in turn will lead to ‘dis- ease’ spiritually.

Like all moral questions it is up to the individual to decide what ‘feels’ right for them. True spiritualism is not about controlling others or telling others what to do, how to act or how to think. It is about self control and finding the right answers for you that are within you. You are essentially spirit within a physical form and your spirit knows its pathway here. So talking to spirit can be as simple as talking to the spirit within you and listening to the answers that are right for you.

I hope this helps but please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

Best wishes

Carole
