A Course in Miracles is one of the few spiritual teachings that says categorically that God did not create this world. He created us as His Son and as immortal spirit, but He did not create anything in the world of form, including our physical bodies. Nature-lovers may have difficulty with this, and understandably so. They perceive the beauty of nature and feel sure that God must have had a part in it. Yet, Jesus insists that the physical universe as well as time and space were not created by God and are, therefore, unreal—just part of the dream we are all dreaming.
We (the Son of God) were created as a Thought in God’s Mind and ideas cannot leave their Source. Therefore, we remain in God’s Mind but we appear to be having this dream of living as separate individuals in a separate world. As Jesus tells us quite clearly in Workbook Lesson 132: “There is no world! This is the central thought the course attempts to teach. Not everyone is ready to accept it, and each one must go as far as he can let himself be led along the road to truth…” W243.
This, however, does not mean that we deny the reality of our experiences here. And it does make sense to nurture and protect Mother Earth. And despite the fact that this is a dream world, we can still enjoy the beauty of nature and, if we feel moved by it, we can use it to remember God. Gazing upon a beautiful landscape, looking out across the ocean, watching a golden sunset or simply tuning into the flowers and birds in one’s garden can all serve the purpose of reminding us of our true nature, which is one with God and with all of creation.
