It’s easy to get caught up in the world of form as there are so many things that keep us preoccupied. But, given the growing number of spiritual seekers, maybe at some level, possibly subconsciously, we realise that there is more to life on earth than meets the eye. This realisation is more likely to dawn on us as we reach middle age – although many younger people are also searching for a spiritual path.
So why do we seek for something more than what this world has to offer? Why do we seek liberation or salvation? It’s interesting to read what Jesus says in this regard in A Course in Miracles (ACIM): “Salvation is no more than a reminder this world is not your home. Its laws are not imposed on you, its values are not yours. And nothing that you think you see in it is really there at all…” Text, p. 530. That last sentence is mind-blowing. What we see in this world doesn’t really exist! No wonder we are searching for the Truth. The reason what we see doesn’t really exist is because it is merely an out-picturing of the thoughts going on in our minds. It doesn’t exist in and of itself.
It doesn’t matter which spiritual path one is on provided it is a teaching that imparts true spiritual knowledge and not misinformation. Many spiritual paths eventually lead the seeker to direct communication with God, or at least with the spirit realm. Meditation is one such way, and many of the Workbook lessons of ACIM require us to meditate upon a key theme, which has the aim of freeing us from our conditioning and from our negative beliefs and replacing them with forgiveness, so that we can become aligned with love. Examples of affirmations that can be used for meditations are: Lesson 124, “Let me remember I am one with God,” Lesson 182, “I will be still an instant and go home,” and Lesson 221, “Peace to my mind. Let all my thoughts be still.”
ACIM also teaches us to contact our inner guide, the Holy Spirit (Higher Self) as He is our direct link with God. We are asked to turn to Him for guidance regarding all important decisions that we have to make. “The Holy Spirit is your Guide in choosing. He is in the part of your mind that always speaks for the right choice, because He speaks for God. He is your remaining communication with God…” Text, p.76. Getting in touch with our inner Guide is a key teaching of ACIM.
