In Lesson 92 in A Course in Miracles, “Miracles are seen in light, and light and strength are one,” Jesus points out that our eyes will show us a lot of suffering in this world. We will see those who are sick, weak, afraid, sad, poor, joyless, etc. But, he asks us not to focus on that. “Strength overlooks these things by seeing past appearances. It keeps its steady gaze upon the light that lies beyond them. It unites with light, of which it is a part…Strength is the truth about you…”
If we focus on the suffering of others we are making this dream world real. But Jesus is not asking us to be callous and unsympathetic towards those who are suffering. His message, after all, was one of love and forgiveness. So when we meet those who are suffering, we offer them the love and help that they need. However, we have to remember that all that happens in the world of the ego is unreal. Therefore, our own suffering and the suffering of others is only happening on the movie screen that we are watching. They are simply our thoughts that we have projected outwards.
Lesson 93, “Light and joy and peace abide in me,” explains quite clearly that, “The self you made is not the Son of God.” Therefore, this self does not exist at all. And anything it seems to do and think means nothing. It is neither bad nor good. It is unreal, and nothing more than that.” Of course we find it difficult to accept this because we identify so much with our physical bodies. Yet, one of the most important concepts in A Course in Miracles is that we are not our bodies, as they were not created by God. We are eternal spirit and we are all Sons of God. So the best thing we can do is to try to look past appearances and see the divine light or divine spark within everyone we meet.
